Blue Earflap Hat

Finish Size:

19” in circumference and 8.75” in depth unstretched.
This size will stretch to fit a medium/large adult head (23”).

Materials

  • Two 23″Size 15 circular needles or 1 set of 40″ circulars using magic loop method
  • 110 yards bulky wool yarn
  • Stitch marker

Gauge:

6 sts and 10 rounds = 4”

Pattern

Earflaps(Work 2):

Using circular needle, cast on 3 sts
Row 1 – P
Row 2 – K1, M1, K, M1, K1 (5 total sts)
Row 3 – repeat rows 1 and 2 (ending with 9 sts)
Row 7 – K
Row 8 – P
Row 9 – K
Repeat rows 8 and 9 until the earflap is 4 in. long
End on a K row
Cut the yarn leaving at least 1 yd long tail
Leave on the circular needle
Repeat from the beginning for second earflap: you can use the same circular needle for this

Hat:

Back:

    Using circular needles, cast on 8 sts
    Row 1 – P
    Row 2 – K

K along one earflap with RS facing you
Front:

    Cast on 14 sts

K along the other earflap
Join the round (40 sts total)

Brim:

Use a stitch marker from this point on
K2, P2 across the back and the earflaps, but purl across the front to create a brim

Body:

This is the point to choose a pattern for the top of the hat
Rnd 1: *K2, P2, repeat from *
Knit in the round repeating rnd 1 for about 5” (this varies with the size of head, you may only need to do this for 4”)

Crown:

Dec Rnd 1: Keeping in pattern, work 1, *p 2 tog, work 4*, repeat from * to *
Work 2 rnds in pattern
Dec Rnd 2: Keeping in pattern, work 2, *p 2 tog, work 4*, repeat from * to *
Work 1 rnd in pattern
Dec Rnd 3: Keeping in pattern, *p 2 tog, work 3*, repeat from * to *
Work 1 rnd in pattern
Dec Rnd 4: *work 2, p 2 tog*
Dec Rnd 5: *p 2 tog, work 1*
Cut yarn, draw tail through remaining sts, and finish off
